The Wake Live At De Boerderij (CD/DVD)

The Wake Live At De Boerderij (CD/DVD)

Laying my cards on the line from the off, my formative musical years were from the mid-1960's onwards, discovering ProgRock in the early 1970's and mainly following the likes of Genesis, Deep Purple, YES and ELP. Although I knew about the likes of Marillion, it came as something of a very-recent shock to hear that a relatively thriving music scene had continued the Prog genre - described by some, as, 'Neo-Prog', from the early to mid-1980's onwards! Unfortunately, my first experience of IQ was after purchasing the CD version of Nomzamo for around £5 at a street market! Undeterred by that initial experience of IQ, I checked out a variety of their material over the years and was quite astonished to think how I had never heard any of this stuff!!! I am quickly righting this wrong and I am eagerly pursuing the IQ back-catalogue of both CD and DVD based material (more on other IQ gems to follow, hopefully!).
Reviewing the audio CD in it's own right, I would simply describe the entire album as superb! The line-up of Paul Cook {drums], Michael Holmes [lead guitar], Peter Nicholls [lead vocal], John Jowitt [bass guitar] and Mark Westworth at the keyboards blend flawlessly together to make this album a wonderful listening experience. I know enough of the Band to know that this line-up have not played together throughout the prior-to (then) 25 years of IQ's existence - clearly, they are all consummate professionals as musicians in their own right. Paul Cook, John Jowitt and Mark Westworth slot into this line-up with ease and don't sound out of place at any point during the concert's recording.
In conclusion, the CD included in this package makes the purchase of this 2 disk collection well worthwhile in it's own right - it would be unfair to pick-out any of the seven main tracks for particular praise, as they are ALL superbly executed and delivered on this live concert recording. Now for the DVD - I may be back Folks!
